REDI Early Career Transition Award

CIHR and partners are excited to launch the inaugural CIHR Research Excellence, Diversity, and Independence (REDI) Early Career Transition Award.

The award is open to post-doctoral researchers, clinical fellows and research associates who self-identify as Black (any gender) or racialized women, as these populations are among the most underrepresented in Canadian faculties and they face discrimination, inequity, and intersecting barriers to employment in academia. After extensive partner outreach, we have been able to put together new funding to offer 42 awards in this round of funding in a wide variety of areas of research. This will ensure there is a robust cohort to form a strong network of support. These are not the only groups who face barriers in transitioning to an academic position, and the focus will be on additional groups in future rounds of the award.

Please note that Canadian citizens and permanent residents can hold their Phase 1 awards (mentorship phase) outside or inside Canada, while Phase 2 (ECR phase) must be held in Canada. Individuals who are neither Canadian citizens nor permanent residents must hold Phase 1 in Canada.

With almost 200 participants joining the first English and French webinars on REDI in December, two more webinars will now be held in in February: English February 1 and French February 2.

The long-term goal of REDI is to promote the growth of diverse research communities in Canadian academic, health systems and research institutions. We are excited about the potential impact of the REDI Award and learning through our first launch and are grateful for your involvement in the development process.
